Ad Astra

Capstone Project//2018

Ad Astra is a project that questions the history of colonization by imagining a future where humans have colonized other parts of our solar system through more sensitive, collaborative, and respectful means. Inspired by the topics explored in The Saltwater We Know class, and by historical and contemporary stories of Native Americans, I wanted to design a project about the immense responsibility ‘explorers’ take on as they colonize new frontiers. In this future, humans have explored and colonized Venus, the moon, Mars, and Ceres, as well as established outposts throughout the system.

South Lake Union is one of the neighborhoods at the center of the tension between those who’ve lived in the neighborhood for decades and the forces of corporate development and gentrification. This tension would not exist without a rich history of residence, industry, and technological advancement.
